It's fall of 1935. Nick Grant has returned from his Pacific adventure building the China Clipper flying boat bases at Midway, Wake, and Guam. Imperial Japanese spies opposed the effort, and only Nick’s intervention saved the project.
Back in California, Nick has earned a part-time job working for Pan Am on weekends., He’s learning the ropes to become a Clipper pilot. But Japan has not given up. They assign their best agent – Lieutenant Commander Miyazaki. His mission: Stop the China Clipper at all costs. Nick is the only one who has seen Miyazaki, and his life is in danger. Despite numerous "accidents" at the Alameda base, no one believes Nick when he sees Miyazaki’s work.
Nick’s reentry into High School has been rough, too. He comes to the aid of Nancy Tanaka, a new Japanese-American girl. She is the butt of racial taunts and slurs, and Nick stands up to the bullies. In the ensuing rumble, Nick and Nancy’s brother, Roger, fight off the thugs. But Roger is cool and even hateful toward Nick. Roger explains that he wanted to attend the U.S. Naval Academy but was turned down because of his race. Miyazaki seizes an opportunity and co-ops Roger to work as an agent for Imperial Japan’s ends.
In December, Nick passes the Flying Boat Flight Engineer (FE) Exam. Commander Boltz, Naval Intelligence, arranges for Nick to join the crew of the Clipper as cover for a courier mission to Hawaii. The courier pouch contains damning intelligence about Miyazaki. The trap is set for Miyazaki with Nick as the unknowing bait. Join Nick as he struggles save the China Clipper from the Japanese spies and their sympathizers.
