During the Golden Age of Aviation, 1927-1941, flying boats were cutting-edge technology. The people involved in developing the flying boats were nothing less than a new generation of intrepid pioneers. They operated literally at the edges of expanding empires, and on the threshold of a new world order. They were present at the nexus of history and fate, and witnessed the opening gambits of the war that redefined, not just our country, but the entire world in which we now live. I try to capture the excitement and romance of those pre-war years. They were full of uncertainty and fear, a time of not quite war, certainly not peace, and always intensely interesting
The geopolitics of the 1930s were complex. Democracy squared off with the growing threat of totalitarianism. The totalitarian Japanese régime was bent on the conquest of China and the Pacific. Japan annexed huge areas of China to control the raw materials needed to feed their war machine. Officially, the U.S. was neutral, but behind the scenes Americans were supplying money, expertise and material to slow the Japanese onslaught. The Nick Grant series is based upon an undeclared espionage war that took place between the United States and Japan.
My novels are by definition fiction even though I have labored to ensure they are historically accurate. My research was almost exclusively from declassified government sources, original histories, memoirs, diaries, collections of letters and period photographs. I also had the opportunity to interview U.S. Intelligence Officers, Pan Am and C.N.A.C. pilots, ground personnel, managers, and their surviving family members. To all I give a hearty thanks.
The majority of the characters are real. The history is real. However, Nick, the Grants, the Tanakas, and the Portas are figments of my imagination – but drawn from people of that era. I have changed the names of the FBI and U.S. Naval Intelligence Officers in order to protect their privacy. The counterintelligence agents truly are the silent warriors and deserve the anonymity that they so jealously guard. I used the place names from the period. This is most pronounced in China where many names changed after the communists won the civil war in the aftermath of World War II.
